In
1961, two years
after its founding, the Dallas Center for the Developmentally Disabled
–then known as Angels, Inc.– was officially chartered by the State of
Texas as a private, not-for-profit, nondenominational school for the
mentally retarded. Operating initially out of a farmhouse on Peavy
Road, Angels, Inc. served children with mental retardation ages six to
thirteen.
As its enrollment grew, Angels, Inc. moved in and out of several temporary
facilities. A permanent facility became a reality in 1976 with a donation
of a tract of land. The next year marked the expansion of services to
meet the needs of infants and young children. The addition of adult programs
soon followed.
Since 1980, Dallas Center
has experienced significant growth in both the early childhood and
adult programs. During the same period, the agency broadened its
commitment to serve all of the greater Dallas Metroplex area.
Today, Dallas Center works in compliance with: Texas Health and Human
Services Commission, Department of Assisitive and Rehabilitative Services,
Department of Aging and Disability Services and U.S. Department of Labor.
